Please note that our May meeting has been pushed back a week and will now be on Friday the 1st of June. We've also added dates for meetings for the rest of the year. The meeting dates are- 1st June 22nd June 13th July 28th September 26th October 23rd November 7th December There won't be a series meeting in August but we'll be holding a family Boob-B-Q on the 4th of August to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week. As well as our two meetings in June, there is an NCT breastfeeding picnic on the 28th of June from 12.00-2.00 on the Cathedral Green. There is an indoor space too so it won't be cancelled if it rains. I'll be there with bells on (actually I'll be wearing my LLL shirt, it's less noisy and more practical). Add Comment In addition to plants and seeds, which are only fun if you like gardening, we will also be selling our brand new Booby Bookmarks at meetings. They are £1.50 or £1 if you also borrow a library book. Handy for keeping your place in a book if you get interrupted. I say 'if' but it's really more of a 'when', isn't it. Spring has sprung and I've been busy in my garden! As a result, I have many plants and seeds to sell at the next meeting, so bring your pennies and pounds if you'd like something new for your garden. If you've got a hobby or skill that you think could help LLL Peterborough to raise a few squid then please let me know. La Leche League is a charity and relies on donations and membership to pay for information sheets, books, training for Leaders and promotional materials so that we can support local mothers. I can beg, I have no shame. LLLove Caz An article was published recently criticising LLL for ‘condemning’ women who do not breastfeed their babies. As our group is new in town and some of you may not be familiar with how LLL works, I’d like to clarify how LLL helps mothers: If you phone or email me to ask for breastfeeding support, or come to any of our meetings, I will-
What I will NOT do-
I hope that helps to clear things up. Please don’t hesitate to call or email me if you need to chat, or come along to a meeting- our group meetings are informal, welcoming and open to all. Best wishes to you and your families, LLLove Caz Thanks to everyone that came to the meeting in February- the topic was Nighttime Parenting but just like many aspects of parenting, a flexible approach works best and we ended up talking about all sorts of interesting things! It was lovely to have some new attendees- welcome! I hope you liked the meeting and that you will join us again in the future. Once again the group library proved popular- we have books on breastfeeding, birth, starting solids and parenting that are available to borrow. We also have tons of information sheets on just about every breastfeeding topic you can think of! If you need any information or have questions about something specific then just ask and I will help you to find it. Our next event is a coffee morning at my place on Tuesday the 6th of March 10.00-12.00. Full details are on the meetings and events page. Thank you again to everyone that came to the meeting. You make the meetings what they are (fabulous, obviously ;) ). If you have any suggestions or requests about future meetings, one-off events etc then please let me know- it's your group! LLLove Caz A few of you have asked, so here it is. For those of you that haven't tried them, these go down well at all the meetings and I now feel obliged to make them every time. I don't mind though, they are quick and easy to make and if any are left over then I get to eat them ;) Flapjack Recipe 125g butter (and a bit for greasing) 90g maple flavoured golden syrup 45g light muscavado sugar 250g rolled oats I usually put in a couple of handfuls of chopped walnuts and a couple of handfuls of raisins, but you could put in whatever you fancy- almonds, cherries, onions.... Maybe not onions. 1. Preheat the oven to gas 4/180C and grease a tin with some butter. I use a 7x7 inch tin which fits the mixture pretty well. 2. Melt the butter, syrup and sugar in a large saucepan. 3. Add the oats and any other ingredients and give it all a good stir. 4. Put it in the greased tin and bake for about half an hour. 5. When it's done, score it lightly into squares (or diamonds or decagons or whatever). 6. Refrigerate overnight. This makes it much easier to get out of the tin! Then cut it into pieces and share it with your friends, if you can bring yourself to share it. Happy baking! Friday 27th January saw our first ever meeting, and what a great morning it was. A big thank you to everyone that came, it was lovely to see some old friends and make some new ones. Here are some pictures of the meeting (if you're on here and you don't want to be, please let me know and I'll take you off!)
We hope that next month you can make it too! If you'd like more information on the many benefits of breastfeeding, there are lots of articles on the LLLI website here. If you want to a one-to-one chat about breastfeeding or if you want more details about our next meeting then you can contact us. LLLove to you and your babies, Caz. Are you thinking about coming to the meeting next week but not really sure what it's all about? Wondering if LLL is for you? Here's the scoop... Everyone is welcome at the meeting. You don't have to have a breastfeeding issue that you need help with; some mothers come simply to meet up with other breastfeeding mothers. Experienced mothers might like to come and share their experiences. Pregnant women might like to come and build a support network and learn about breastfeeding in preparation for their baby's arrival. It's free to attend but donations are always welcome ;) A La Leche League 'series' meeting (so-called because they follow a series of topics) is an informal meeting that includes a discussion based around a certain topic. However, everyone is welcome to bring along any questions or experiences they want to share, even if they don't relate to the discussion topic. Mothers are asked to keep things they hear and see at a meeting confidential so we can all be confident in asking or sharing whatever we need to. The discussion is informal and nearly everyone there will have a baby or toddler (or both!) so you don't need to worry that you baby will cry or that your toddler will start throwing raisins- everyone else will be in the same boat and it's fine to come late, leave early, go and change a nappy during the discussion etc. Whatever your child needs! You might see and hear some new things at the meeting. Please don't worry if you hear something you don't like the sound of- we're all different and what suits another family may not suit you. LLL believes that every mother is the expert of her own baby. After the discussion there will be a chance to chat to other breastfeeding mothers, browse the group library (and choose a book to borrow if you like) or chat one-to-one with a Leader if you have something you'd like to discuss. I hope that answers any questions you have. I'm really looking forward to Friday's meeting and hope to see you there. LLLove Caz All babies cry- it's their way of communicating- but some babies seem to cry more than others. Sometimes it can be difficult to figure out why a baby is crying or to know how to comfort them. If you are worried that your baby seems unsettled or you think something may be wrong then there are various people you can ask for help. If you are worried about your baby's health then you can talk to your health visitor, GP or another health care provider. If you are experiencing any kind of breastfeeding issue or if you just need a bit of encouragement then you can contact me via phone or email, or call the national helpline on 0845 120 2918 for 24 hour support. There are also some ideas for comforting fussy babies on the LLLI website here. Lots of LLLove to you and your babies, Caz. Today was the very first LLL Peterborough coffee morning! I was super-excited about it and I think it went pretty well. It was lovely to see some familiar faces and to make some new friends, not to mention all the extremely cute children that were there. I hope to arrange another coffee morning soon and maybe I'll see you there? If you'd like to host a coffee morning then please let me know. I had a delivery yesterday (right in time for the coffee morning) of our brand new shiny group library books. The group library is available to browse at all our meetings and if you like you can borrow a book or books (this is free for members, non-members are politely asked to donate £1 per book). These are the titles we have available- The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding (8th edition) The No-Cry Sleep Solution What Mothers Do (Especially When it Looks Like Nothing) Adventures in Tandem Nursing Three in a Bed (about sharing a bed with your baby) How to Talk so Kids Will Listen and Listen so Kids Will Talk Hirkani's Daughters (about combining breastfeeding with returning to work) Ina May's Guide to Childbirth Baby-Led Weaning Siblings Without Rivalry Raising a Daughter Mothering Your Nursing Toddler Breastfeeding Older Children The Politics of Breastfeeding Unconditional Parenting We also have all kinds of information leaflets! If you’d like to know more about any breastfeeding topic, just ask and I’ll help you to find the information you need. That’s it for today, if you would like regular updates then please sign up to the mailing list (you can fill in the form on the contact page). I won’t pass your email address on to anyone else.
